What do you mean when you talk about "business solutions"?

We define a business solution as one that uses the resources and ideas of business to bring about a positive and sustainable change to a specific social issue faced by farm workers and their children.
The following is a list of possible examples that we believe constitute a business solution:
- Creating a program to teach farm workers about starting a new venture with the goal of helping them transition from field work into a more stable and financially lucrative career.
- Teaching farm workers about personal financial planning concepts such as savings and investments with the goal of helping them increase their overall net worth and reduce the cultural barriers that prevent them from participating in the financial services industry.
- Reinforcing the idea that education is the key to success in America and given farm laborers the resources to help themselves and their children achieve a higher educational status.
- Raising money and funding existing organizations and programs that help bring about positive social change in this community.

What is a venture philanthropy firm?

A traditional venture capital (VC) firm invests in a portfolio of companies with the goal of creating an adequate return on its investment. Among other things, the VC firm conducts extensive due diligence to identify the best investment prospects, and provides capital and management expertise to a select set of firms that meet its stringent criteria. Similarly, venture philanthropy firms search for the best investment prospects, but the required return must have a social component. The goal of RFDF is to invest in ventures that provide a social return to the U.S. farm worker population and does so with a business theme.

|

How can I insure my donation is well invested?

Any dollar that is invested and/or any unit of time invested by our volunteers, requires an in-kind return. For example, if Jim Smith donated 2 hours of his time to mentor Angie Garcia on ways to approach a business school interview, Angie must is in turn committed to given a minimum two hours of her time to another RFDF initiative. Similarly, if Angie received a $1,000 scholarship for her studies at XYX University for her MBA, she would be required to provide a minimum amount back into an RFDF initiative.
